Understanding Your Radiator

Your radiator is made of aluminum and is mainly composed of a series of tubes designed to help pull heat from your engine. It works with coolant, or antifreeze. Coolant gathers heat from your engine, then flows through the tubes of your radiator. The radiator cools the coolant through air flow, fans and fins called turbulators, which create extra fluid turbulence. By moving the coolant around, more liquid is able to touch the cooled tubes and lower the overall temperature.

If you run out of coolant, the radiator starts to leak or the turbulators stop working, your engine can overheat to the point of combustion. If you think there’s a problem with your radiator, or any of the cooling components under your hood, call 12th Street Auto Care Center right away. Our technicians are happy to help.

Signs Your Radiator is Dying

When your radiator starts to cause trouble, you need to act fast. The more you hesitate, the more extensive the damage becomes. Here are a few signs that indicate radiator problems.

  • Engine overheats
  • Heater stops working
  • Smoke appears from under hood
  • Coolant leak
  • Discolored coolant
  • Damaged radiator fins
  • Low coolant levels

If you notice any of these symptoms, call 12th Street Auto Care Center right away. Don’t try to drive your vehicle to us, call a tow truck instead. If you attempt to drive through the symptoms of a failing radiator, you risk overheating your engine and melting or warping more components. Once we have your car, our ASE-certified mechanics can fix or replace your radiator and get you back on the road safe and sound.
