Input, Layshaft and Output Shafts
There are three kinds of gear shafts within a manual transmission: the output shaft, the input shaft, and the layshaft.
- Output Shaft: the output shaft is connected to the differential, which allows the wheels of a vehicle to turn at different speeds.
- Input Shaft: the input shaft is connected directly to the engine and turns at the same speed, or carries the same rotational power that the engine puts out.
- Layshaft: the layshaft is a mesh of gears as one whole unit, which works with the input shaft to shift between gears, selected by the gear selector fork.
