A water pump, also called a coolant pump, is a basic centrifugal pump that circulates coolant throughout the engine block and the tubes linked to it. The pump is only active while the engine is running. The water pump is the core of the engine cooling system and is driven by the engine drive belt by means of a pulley system, which is connected to the crankshaft. When the engine initially starts and the coolant is flowing through, it does not continue through the whole system until the vehicle’s thermostat tells it to circulate.
